We search for lost people. For example, a hunter who does not return at the scheduled time, an elderly person who walks away, or a lost child who wanders off during a camping trip. We do not search for fugitives from justice or anyone presumed to be dangerous. The team is activated locally by the Cayuga County Sheriffs Department and statewide by the New York State Forest Rangers.

If you are a hiker or camper you have a good start. With some basic training you can be ready to participate in a search. Gaining expertise in specialized areas of SAR can be a lifelong avocation. People interested in support functions are also needed.

How Available Do I Have To Be ?

As available as you can make yourself. We realize people have different work and family commitments. Some of us can be available immediately; for others it isn’t that easy.

When and Where Do You Meet ?

CCHSAR meets the third Sunday of each month at 12:00 pm prior to our Team Training at the Sennett FD. If you are interested in attending, please contact out Team Coordinator.

All active members have completed the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Wildlands Search Course.

Each member provides their own personal clothing and gear.

Persons interested in becoming K-9 Handlers must be a Grid Team member for 1 year in order to be eligible for the K-9 Unit. It is advisable to hold off purchasing a pup until you have been on the team for a year
