Recycling Options

Computer Recycling Options for Individuals:

There are several options for recycling your computer.

  1. Hold onto the computer until Cayuga County's home electronics recycling event.

  2. Contact the computer company. Some offer "end of life" processing.

    • IBM:
For more information call 1-800-IBM-4YOU or visit them at www.ibm.com/us .

    • Dell:
Free for Dell brands. For more information call 1-800-915-3355 or visit them at www1.us.dell.com.

    • Apple:
$30 (including shipping) for a box of equipment up 60lbs. For more information call 1-888-638-2761
      or visit them at www.recycleapc.com/Apple/#.

    • Hewlett-Packard:
$13-$34 depending on the type and quantity of hardware to be returned. They have a free pick-up service. For more information call 1-888-485-1849 or visit them at warp1.external.hp.com/recycle.

  3. Retail stores in select areas may also sponsor computer recycling. For example, Staples Stores recycle used computers, monitors, laptops, and desktop printers, faxes and all–in–ones. All brands are accepted, regardless of whether or not the equipment was purchased at Staples. A recycling fee of $10 per piece of large equipment is charged to cover handling, transport, product disassembly and recycling. Smaller computer peripherals such as keyboards, mice, and speakers are accepted at no charge. See www.staples.com/sbd/content/about/soul/recycling.html

  4. Personally take your computer to a recycler. Cayuga County has worked with 5R Processors in the past (This information is provided as a service and is not an endorsement by Cayuga County for 5R Processors).

Computer Recycling for Businesses, Municipalities and Schools

We have contracted with 5R Processors and Regional Computer Recycling and Recovery (RCRR) for our past collection events. You can contact them and arrange for pick-up at your facility. They charge a pick-up fee, so it may be beneficial for you to collaborate with other businesses so you can share the fee. Call to see if a business is scheduling a pick-up near you. If you want to donate your old computer equipment, some processors will work with you and the recipient to evaluate how practical the donation is. Many times, the non-profit or charity must pay to dispose of donated equipment.

Propane Cylinder Recycling Options

Propane Recycling Options for Individuals:

Remember that a full or nearly full propane cylinder is a fire hazard. If you are going to save your cylinder for Cayuga County's next collection event, we recommend that you use as much of the propane as possible before storing the cylinder.

For free or a small fee, many retail stores (Walmart, Lowe's, Agway, etc.) that provide propane cylinder refills will trade your obsolete cylinder for a filled cylinder with an OPD. (What's an OPD?)

Many gas stations (Kwik Fill, Fleming Pit Stop, etc.) that offer propane refilling may also take your cylinder for trade in.

Propane Cylinder Recycling for Businesses, Municipalities and Schools

For a small fee, CEMCO will accept propane tanks and for recycling. (This information is provided as a service and is not an endorsement by Cayuga County for US Cylinder Disposal).
