Obsolete Propane CylindersPropane tank

Thousands of propane grill cylinders are overfilled every year. Overfilled cylinders are potentially dangerous.

Cylinder with overfill protection deviceA new fire code requires that propane cylinders in the size range of 4 pounds to 40 pounds have an overfill protection device (OPD) in the valve. These OPDs can be identified by a triangular shaped hand wheel.

Obsolete cylinder hand wheel On April 1, 2002, all propane cylinders with round or star shaped hand wheels can no longer be filled by anyone making the cylinder obsolete. If you have an obsolete cylinder, you cannot refill it anywhere after April 1st.

Obsolete cylinders are collected at the County's Spring Home Electronics and Propane Cylinder Recycling Events. If you miss a spring collection event, click here for options.

Remember that a full or nearly full propane cylinder is a fire hazard. If you are going to save the cylinder for the next collection event, we recommend you use as much of the propane as possible before storing it.
