The second installment of the Summer in the Finger Lakes exhibit series, From Toddler to Teenager: Growing up on Vacation, will be on display from Saturday, June 7th through the end of 2008 at the Cayuga Museum.  The exhibit is part of a collaborative project between five other historical institutions in the Finger Lakes region.  From Toddler to Teenager explores the tradition of returning to the lake each summer as children, and later as adults. The panel exhibit features interesting perspective on family ritual and personal experiences of vacationing on the Finger Lakes. For more information or to learn about the other exhibits within the region, visit www.summerinthefingerlakes.org

Currently on Display:

From Plate to Print - featuring prints made from glass plate negatives in the Cayuga Museum collection will be on display beginning February 2nd. This exhibit will be at the Museum for several years. We will periodically be adding more photos from the glass plate collection and rotating others out.

And

A Child's World - The idea for A Child’s World came from our smallest fans, the hundreds of school children who visit our museum each year. Eager to see how children lived in the past, these visitors asked and we responded.

A Child’s World will present a view of childhood stretching from colonial times to the present exploring ideas of education, family, and child labor.  Children and adults alike will have the opportunity to see beautifully-wrought samplers made by young girls, as well as less pleasant reminders of 19th century childhood, indenture papers of young children.  Any exhibit on children has to explore the concept of play and we are pleased to display countless toys and games which will delight young and old.

Several programs will be offered during the exhibit that appeal to children and families. Dave Ruch, singer-storyteller, will enchant audiences with his songs about the Erie Canal, Native Americans, and New York State. An accomplished musician, Ruch will perform the banjo, mandolin, guitar, jew’s harp, and washtub bass, along with the participation of the audience. Ruch will perform at the Cayuga Museum on May 31st at 2:00 p.m.  His performance is made possible with the support of the New York State Council on the Humanities.  On July 16th, museum director, Eileen McHugh will conduct a workshop on cross-stitch, providing a rich history of this art alongside historic examples. For young girls, the needle arts were an essential part of their education as future mothers and homemakers.  Supplies will be provided for this workshop. Please call to reserve your and/or your child’s place.  A workshop on the basics of knitting will be provided the following week, on Wednesday, July 23rd. Yarn will be provided.

The Case Research Lab Museum

A permanent display at the site, the building where Theodore Case developed the first successful sound-on-film technology now houses an exhibit telling the full story of how "talkies" were invented in our own backyard.
