Two state launches provide access to the Seneca River and Howland Island free of charge. Howland Island Boat Launch and Mosquito Point Bridge both offer lake access and parking for non-motorized watercraft recreationists. Howland Island Wildlife Management Area provides 3,600 acres of diverse habitat which supports a high level of biodiversity. The "island" was formed in the early 1900's when the NYS Barge Canal was built (the Seneca River borders the island to the north, the Barge Canal to the south). A bridge was built at this time to provide access across the Barge Canal to Howland Island. Today, access roads on the island provide a firm surface for hiking and exploration of ponds, hills, fields, forests, marshes and wetlands. Located within the Montezuma Wetlands Focus Area, visitors to Howland Island may expect to see numerous bird species such as bald eagle, wild turkey, great blue heron, and red-tailed hawk. Canoeists and nature enthusiasts will find pure delight and serentity in exploring the many inland channels and trails of this island. |
